Church Strand-Community of Disciples - Te Whānau a Te Karaiti

KEY IDEAS FOR CHURCH
These are derived from investigation of the theological focus, the strand progressions over 8 years and what we believe are the key ideas our year 8 leavers will need to know and understand by the time they leave St Joseph's.  Our selection of the key ideas is guided by our understanding of the Nicene Creed, the founding belief statement of the Catholic faith dating back to the Council of Nicea in AD325; Biblical teaching; Church tradition; and the Catechism of the Catholic church which the original RE curriculum documents are based on.
Key Ideas

1.             The Church is the people united with God
2.             We all have a responsibility in the Church
3.             There are formal responsibilities in the Church
4.             The mission of the Church is to bring about the Kingdom of God on Earth.
Main concepts we have decided as a school:
1. The Church is the people united with God.
We want the children to know they ARE the church. Becoming part of the church- ceremonies, initiations, Baptism. That we are Disciples- following the way of Jesus. Belonging and Participating. The Church shows us how we need to act in our lives- we are the Church. Church as the bride of Christ. We are a community of disciples, our parish is a sign of God in the world- Jesus founded the Church and it is a sign which brings about God's presence and love in the world.
2. We all have a responsibility in the Church.
To take some responsibility like presenting the Gospel or saying prayers or reading or children's ministries such as altar serving etc... What are we called to do because we are part of the Church (vocations) Roles in the Church.
3. Formal roles within the Church
The work of the priest in the Church. Teaching role of Bishops and the role of the Pope.
4. The Mission of the Church is to bring about the Kingdom of God on Earth
To understand that the Church is the continuation of Jesus' mission to live God's Kingdom on Earth.

Church - Teacher’s Guide
Could use PEEL paragraph.  Point, Example (would need more than 2), Explain (relational), Link (extended abstract).
Could record orally and transcribe, can draw, give an explanation of something made/done (we remember more of what we do)

1. The Church is the people united with God
Overall
We want the children to know they ARE the church.  The prayer - Christ has no body now but yours’, hands etc…
Becoming part of the church – Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist
That we are Disciples- following the way of Jesus
Belonging and participating
The Church shows us how we need to act in our lives - we are the Church
how do people become part of the Church - Ceremonies, Initiations
Church as the bride of Christ
Church as the body of Christ
We are a community of disciples , our parish is a sign of God in the world - Jesus founded the Church and that it is a sign which brings about God’s presence and love in the world.

Relational: Something about their personal connection with church.  Maybe relating sacraments.

Extended Abstract: What about people who choose not to be united?  What about if you come to school here but don’t do sacraments?  So are non-Baptised people part of the church? Church is not a building but a community in the world.  United with God and not a building. What about other or no religion? Are they part of God’s church? What about people who are for instance living a homosexual life?

2. We all have a responsibility in the Church
Overall
To take some responsibility like reading at church or altar serving or saying prayers
What are we called to do because we are part of the church (vocations)?
Roles in the church

Relational:  Through taking responsibility, you enrich yourself and grow.  Participating. Team. Whanau/church responsibilities.

Extended Abstract: Aware that everything you do you work for God.  Your life is a celebration of God. Giving praise to God - connected with heaven.  We stand on holy ground. Lips/hands - connecting the Eucharist, or blessing, back into your life.  Christ has no body now but mine.

3. There are formal responsibilities in the Church

Overall
The work of the priest in the church – the priest carries out the Eucharistic sacrament
Teaching role of bishops – only the bishops can interpret Church teaching guided by the Holy Spirit – the priests share this with the people but they do not interpret it.  The Bishop is the shepherd of the diocese and has the shepherd’s crook
The role of the Pope
All these can be found in the strand teaching books

Relational: Compare contrast, some people can do some roles, but not others.  Compare sisters/brothers/priests/lay people and different orders.

Extended Abstract: Baptism is a gift and a responsibilities.  WE are all priest, prophet and king. Been given but give back.  Why aren’t women priests? Why aren’t priests married?

4.The mission of the Church is to bring about the Kingdom of God on Earth.

Level
Multistructural:  Strand Achievement Objectives
Overall
To bring about the Kingdom of God on Earth?  In accordance with the Our Father prayer – we are not just sitting back and waiting for it to happen we have to make it happen, guided and inspired by the Holy Spirit.
To share the Good News – the Word of God
Evangelisation – to encourage all to participate

Relational: Chn sharing the Good news in one way or another.

Extended abstract: Actively sharing the Good News,  Questioning how is the Kingdom growing when there’s so much suffering.  Those who do good but are not Christians are they bringing about the Kingdom of God?

Church Assessment SOLO Marking Guide
Choose an activity or group of activities that will show the children's understanding.  From year 1-6 show tie in your strand content to the most appropriate key idea.  For year 7 & 8 children write an essay to explain all four key ideas using content information from their strand learning (and learning in previous years).  For year 7 & 8 you may also decide to give children alternate ways of showing their understanding which are also valid.  We use an essay as that is the standard means of showing content knowledge in formal assessment and we want them to learn the techniques.

For Years 1-3 an overall teacher judgement on discussions and work down in class.
For years 4+ use the test with open-ended answers

Things which will may show understanding
